About Thibault Van Renne
In short: we founded the house in 2006, carrying forward a family tradition in hand-knotted carpets that began with Luc Van Renne's imports in 1974. Every rug is still hand-knotted today, in our ateliers in India and Nepal, and we are a member of Care & Fair. Our Spaces collection won both the European Product Design Award and the Architizer A+ Award (Popular Choice) in 2020.
The art of woven innovation
A rug is the largest single surface in most rooms, and the one people actually touch. That is why we treat it as the piece a room is built around, not the thing that goes underneath the furniture. Ours are hand-knotted to last generations. The craftsmanship and innovation behind that are covered on their own pages.
The house started with Thibault Van Renne's own history. He grew up around textiles and travelled young to the regions where carpets are made, learning from the weavers working there. That is where he learned to judge quality, and where he decided to remake the traditional rug.
In 2006, he founded the house under his own name, pairing traditional hand-knotting with designs drawn digitally rather than by hand. The rugs that came from it look contemporary, and are made to last for generations, the way hand-knotted rugs always have.
Where our designs come from
Our designs start in two places at once: classical motifs and architectural geometry on one side, abstract art and the texture of natural materials on the other. What comes out of it belongs to neither alone.
Digital design and hand-knotting are usually seen as opposites. We use one to feed the other, letting the drawing get as intricate as we like while the weaving still resolves it knot by knot. That is how we reach a level of detail machine-made rugs cannot match.

Made by hand, in India and Nepal
Every Thibault Van Renne rug is made entirely by hand, in our ateliers in India and Nepal. It begins with the natural materials: hand-spun silk and hand-carded wool.
Our weavers learned hand-knotting from the generation before them, and they tie every knot of a TVR design by hand, exactly as it was drawn. We support Care & Fair, which means no child labour, fair wages and decent working conditions for the weavers and their communities.
An invitation to the showroom
No photograph shows what these rugs actually do with light. You have to stand on one.
Come and see them at our showroom and design studio, just outside Ghent, Belgium. You can handle the wool and the silk, see finished pieces at full size, and bring your floor plan to the table with us. We will help you choose a piece, or design one from scratch.
