Silk is the reason people stop in front of certain rugs and not others. It catches the light, shifts colour as you walk around the piece, and holds detail no other fibre can hold. This page explains how we work with it, what a silk rug costs, and how to commission one.
The short answer
We hand-knot luxury silk rugs in natural mulberry silk, from pieces in 100% silk to designs where silk carries the pattern over a wool ground. Every piece is bespoke, made to your size and palette in our ateliers in Nepal and India, and priced per square metre with VAT included. Silk-led pieces run from EUR 1,600 per square metre for our 100% silk collection to EUR 2,300 per square metre for the most intricate wool-and-silk designs.
What silk does in a rug
Wool absorbs light; silk reflects it. Knotted next to each other, the silk areas of a design light up against the matte wool ground, so the pattern changes with every hour of the day and every angle you view it from. Silk also takes a much finer knot than wool. That is why our most detailed designs, at knot densities of 11 by 11 and beyond, carry their drawing in silk.
Our silk
We work with hand-spun natural mulberry silk. For our Indian production it comes from a small silk house in Bangalore; for our Nepalese production we import it from China. In specific designs we blend in wild silk, from a different silkworm, with a more visible natural irregularity for a rustic depth. Nothing we call silk is anything other than real animal silk.
Where we use bamboo silk, a plant-based viscose, we say so openly: it appears in three named collections only and is never sold as natural silk. The full story is in our guide on natural silk versus viscose.
The silk collections
Yogama is our 100% natural silk collection: a flat weave combined with traditional hand knotting, 10 by 10 knot density, at EUR 1,600 per square metre.
The heart of our silk work is wool-and-silk handcarving, where silk draws the design over a wool ground and the relief is cut by hand with scissors. Viviane sets a silk drawing in four colours on a plain ground (EUR 1,695 to 1,995 per square metre). Visual is design intricacy at its finest, 11 by 11 knots (EUR 1,995 to 2,250). Ancient, our legendary sandblasted collection, and Artline, an artistic play of lines, both start at EUR 1,995. Mosaic lets you walk on an ancient Roman floor at EUR 2,300 per square metre. Where a silk rug belongs
A silk-led rug is at its best where its light-play is seen and its fibre is respected: a bedroom, a formal sitting room, a dining room under gentle use. For a hallway or a busy family room we usually advise letting wool carry the ground and reserving silk for the design, which is exactly how most of our collections are built. Care and longevity
A hand-knotted silk or wool-and-silk rug lasts 20 to 30 years and more with normal household care, and it is washable: our own pH-balanced washing removes what daily life leaves behind without stripping the fibre. There is no glue anywhere in the construction. Every piece leaves the atelier with a Rug Passport, a digital certificate carrying its exact dimensions, materials, and the master weaver's signature.

Questions people ask about silk rugs
Are your silk rugs real silk? Yes. Everything we call silk is natural mulberry silk, hand-spun, sometimes blended with wild silk for a more rustic look. Bamboo silk, a plant-based viscose, appears only in three named collections and is always disclosed as what it is.
What does a luxury silk rug cost? Our 100% silk collection Yogama is EUR 1,600 per square metre. Wool-and-silk designs run from EUR 1,495 to EUR 2,300 per square metre depending on the collection and knot density. Prices include VAT and exclude shipping; you can price any size yourself in the online configurator.
Can I have any design made in 100% silk? Yes. Every TVR rug is bespoke, so beyond the Yogama collection we can knot a design in full silk on request. Silk takes the finest knot of any fibre, so detail is at its highest there.
Is a silk rug suitable for a busy room? Silk asks for gentler use than wool. For high-traffic rooms we advise a wool ground with silk in the design, which most of our collections already are. For bedrooms and formal rooms, full silk is glorious.
What is the difference between natural silk and bamboo silk? Natural silk comes from the silkworm; bamboo silk is a plant-based viscose with a high lustre at a lower price. We use bamboo silk in three collections only, always named as such, and never sold as natural silk.
