Where to buy a custom hand-knotted rug

The best place to buy a custom hand-knotted rug is directly from the atelier that makes it. That way it is knotted to your exact size, shape, design and materials, with nothing lost to a middleman, and you can trace every knot back to the loom it came from. This page explains how that works at Thibault Van Renne, and what to check before you commit.

The short answer

You buy a custom hand-knotted rug directly from the maker, not off a shelf. At Thibault Van Renne you can do that three ways: in our showroom near Ghent, at home with a personal visit, or entirely remotely by video with a physical material kit sent to you. We ship worldwide, and nothing goes on the loom until you have approved the design in your own space.

Why buy directly from the maker

A hand-knotted rug is a commission, not a stock item. Buying from the atelier means the size, colours and design are made for your room, the price has no reseller markup, and every piece leaves with a Rug Passport, a certificate of authenticity carrying its exact dimensions, materials and the master weaver's signature. You know it is genuinely hand-knotted, in the fibres you were promised.

The ways to buy from Thibault Van Renne

In our showroom, by appointment. Come to Noorwegenstraat 51, Evergem, near Ghent. See finished rugs, handle the full material library, and discuss your project in person. Parking is free and directly in front.

At home. For clients in the Benelux and Northern France, Thibault personally brings a curated selection to your home so you can see the rugs in your own light and interior.

Fully remotely, anywhere in the world. We consult by video, send a physical material kit to your door, and present a photorealistic rendering of the rug in your space for approval. Distance is never an obstacle.

Through your interior designer. Design professionals order through TVR Pro, our trade programme, with dedicated pricing and a media library. If you work with a designer, they can specify a TVR rug for you.

Delivery worldwide. We ship to any country. For commissions above 50,000 euro we offer white-glove, climate-controlled delivery with personal installation.

What to check before you buy any hand-knotted rug

Ask three questions of any seller. Is it truly hand-knotted, with the pattern visible on the back, rather than tufted and glued? If it is described as silk, is it natural mulberry silk rather than relabelled viscose? And does it come with proof of authenticity? A genuine piece survives that scrutiny; the answer to those questions is the answer to whether it is worth its price.

How a bespoke order works

The process is the same wherever you buy. We start with a consultation and your floor plan, choose materials and colours from the pom-pom library, and prepare a photorealistic rendering of the rug in proportion in your room. Once you approve it, the piece is set up on its own loom and hand-knotted over five to twelve months, then washed, finished and delivered. You commit only after you have seen exactly what you will receive.

Questions people ask

Can I buy a hand-knotted rug online? You can start your order online and we complete it as a bespoke commission. Because every rug is made to your size and design, the final piece is confirmed with you directly rather than shipped from stock. You approve a rendering before anything is knotted.

Can I buy from abroad? Yes. We work with clients worldwide by video, send a material kit to your door, and ship the finished rug to any country. Many of our commissions are placed entirely remotely.

Can I see the rug before I buy it? Yes. You see finished rugs and materials in the showroom or at home, and for every commission we present a photorealistic rendering of your exact rug in your space before it goes on the loom.

How long does a custom rug take, and what does it cost? Five to twelve months depending on size, materials and knot density. Rugs are priced per square metre by collection and material; a consultation gives you an exact quote for your piece.

Do you sell through interior designers? Yes. Designers and architects order through TVR Pro with trade pricing. Your designer can specify and order a TVR rug on your behalf.
