Hand-knotted rugs for five-star hotels and resorts
Hand-knotted rugs for five-star hotels and resorts
A hotel rug is not judged the way a private rug is. It has to read well from across a lobby, survive years of daily footfall, and still make a guest feel they are somewhere specific. This page explains how we work with hospitality projects, from the first brief to the last fitting.
The short answer
We hand-knot bespoke rugs for five-star hotels and resorts in Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Gulf, working directly with the architect or design team from brief to installation. We have made rugs for signature suites at Ritz-Carlton Dubai, IKOS Resorts in Marbella and Iberostar, and we extend hotel clients the same confidentiality we give private collectors and yacht owners. For corridors and ballrooms, where a hand-knotted rug is rarely the right choice, we offer a separate tufted line built the way any hospitality carpet is built. Every project starts with a brief and ends with a rug that carries our passport.
Who commissions a TVR hotel rug
Our hospitality clients are architects, interior designers and hotel groups furnishing a signature suite, a private dining room, a spa or a lobby where one rug has to carry the whole room. We have supplied rugs for Ritz-Carlton Dubai, IKOS Resorts in Marbella and Iberostar. Beyond those three, most of our hospitality and superyacht work happens under non-disclosure, the same way a private client's rug never appears in our portfolio without permission.
Capacity is rarely the question. Our largest single delivery to date was 440 large hand-knotted rugs within eight months, unusual for rugs of this fineness, and the same ateliers in Nepal and India scale to a full hotel programme. You still deal with one person: Thibault leads the project, and the team behind him carries the volume.
How a hospitality commission works
A commission moves through five stages. First, a brief: room dimensions, palette, the pattern language of the interior, and any technical requirements the project has already set. Second, a rendering, so the design team can see the rug in the room before a single knot is tied. Third, a physical sample, usually a corner of the design at full scale and real colour, so material and dye are approved in hand rather than on screen. Fourth, production in our ateliers in Nepal and India, where every rug is designed in our own atelier near Ghent and hand-knotted to the approved sample. Fifth, delivery and installation, coordinated with your contractor's schedule. We answer every enquiry within one working day, and a standard commission runs 4 to 6 months from approved sample to delivery. The Ancient collection, sandblasted by hand, takes 8 months.
Bespoke by default, any size and shape
Every TVR rug has been made to order since 2009, so a hotel commission is not an exception to our process, it is the process. There is no surcharge for a non-standard size or an irregular shape cut to fit a curved wall or a column. Round rugs go up to 25 metres in diameter, which covers most lobby and lounge applications. We work in wool and natural mulberry silk, hand-spun and never synthetic in the pile, at knot densities from 9 by 9 up to 14 by 14 depending on the design. We do the handcarving with scissors, and our Ancient collection uses a sandblasting technique for its aged, worn-in look.
Large floor areas: the tufted line
A hand-knotted rug is a considered object for a defined space. A hotel corridor or a ballroom is a different problem: continuous floor coverage, a different budget per square metre, and wear patterns that do not suit a hand-knotted construction. For those areas we offer a separate tufted line, made in New Zealand wool, or Tencel or viscose on request, with a cotton backing, built the way any tufted hospitality carpet is built. It is a different product from our hand-knotted rugs, priced and specified on its own terms, and we tell every client which product suits which floor before a design is drawn. We have not verified flame-retardant or other technical certifications for either line, so if your project has a certification requirement, raise it at the brief stage and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it.
Care, repair and warranty after installation
A hospitality rug has to hold up for years of use, so every commission ships with our Wonder Case, our own maintenance kit with stain spray and stain remover, at no extra cost, as it has since 2018. We recommend professional cleaning by a specialist in hand-knotted rugs every 5 to 7 years depending on foot traffic, and we run our own washing and repair service from our atelier in Belgium: re-securing fringes, rebuilding warp and weft, closing damage, reworking worn borders, and reweaving a section knot for knot with match-dyed yarn when needed. Our own underlay is washable at 30 degrees and helps a rug sit safely on a busy floor. The Grunge collection carries a 20-year warranty, every other collection carries 5 years. Full details of our washing, repair and valuation services are on the services page.
Trade access for hospitality buyers
Hospitality buyers, architects and designers work with us through the trade portal, where you get project pricing and a direct line to the team handling your commission. If you would rather start with a conversation, leave your details through the contact page and Thibault follows up personally, or read more about how we approach custom-made rugs before you brief us.
Frequently asked questions about hotel rugs
Which hotels has TVR supplied rugs to? We have made rugs for signature suites at Ritz-Carlton Dubai, IKOS Resorts in Marbella and Iberostar. Most of our other hospitality and superyacht work is under non-disclosure, at the client's request, the same protection we offer any private commission.
How does a hospitality commission work, from brief to delivery? It runs through five stages: a brief covering dimensions and palette, a rendering, a physical sample at full scale and colour, production in our ateliers in Nepal and India, and delivery coordinated with your contractor. We answer every enquiry within one working day.
What is the lead time for a hotel rug commission? A standard commission takes 4 to 6 months from an approved sample to delivery. The Ancient collection, sandblasted by hand, takes 8 months. Both timelines start once the sample is signed off, not at the first brief.
Can TVR cover large floor areas like corridors and ballrooms? Yes, through a separate tufted line in New Zealand wool, or Tencel or viscose on request, with a cotton backing. It is a different product from our hand-knotted rugs, priced and specified on its own terms, and we recommend the right one for each floor during the brief.
Are TVR hotel rugs fire-rated or certified? We have not verified flame-retardant or other technical certifications for either our hand-knotted or tufted lines. If your project needs a specific certification, raise it during the brief and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it before any design work starts.
How are hotel rugs maintained after installation? Every commission ships with our Wonder Case maintenance kit at no extra cost. We recommend specialist cleaning every 5 to 7 years depending on traffic, and our Belgian atelier handles repairs, from fringe work to knot-for-knot reweaving, when a rug needs it.
