Made to Measure: Why Every TVR Rug Is Woven to Your Exact Dimensions
Every room is different. That's why every rug we make is woven to exact dimensions.
This isn't a premium service or an upgrade. It's simply how we work. There are no stock sizes, no cutting from rolls, no compromises. Each rug is woven from scratch on a dedicated loom, to the precise measurements your space requires.
After 20 years of working this way, I can tell you: standard sizes are a compromise invented by mass production. Your room doesn't come in standard dimensions. Your rug shouldn't either.
Why Standard Sizes Rarely Work
Walk into any high-end interior and you'll notice that the rugs fit the rooms perfectly. That's not luck. those are custom pieces. A rug designed for a specific space, accounting for furniture placement, architectural features, and how people actually move through the room.
Standard sizes. 200 x 300, 250 x 350. work in standard rooms. But the kind of interiors we work on are rarely standard. Curved walls, asymmetric layouts, split-level floors, oversized living areas in new builds. These spaces need a rug that's made for them, not adapted to them.
How Our Process Works
It starts in our studio at Noorwegenstraat 51 in Evergem, or remotely for international clients. We begin with your floor plan and discuss the role the rug will play in the room. is it the focal point, or should it ground the furniture without competing with other elements?
From there, we move to materials and colour. We work with over 1,200 pom-pom colour options. hand-dyed wool and silk samples that you can see, touch, and compare against your own material swatches, wall colours, or stone samples. Nothing is chosen from a screen. Colour is too important for that.
Once design, dimensions, and colours are confirmed, we create a digital rendering showing the rug in proportion. You approve the final design before anything goes on a loom.

The Weaving
We don't cut from a larger piece. Each rug is set up on its own loom, with the warp threads measured and tensioned to your exact width and length. The weavers work row by row, knot by knot.
This matters because a hand-knotted rug isn't just a surface. it's a structure. The density of the knots, the tension of the foundation, the way the pile sits. all of this is calibrated for the specific dimensions of your piece.
When we scale a design up or down, we don't just stretch or shrink it. The motifs are re-proportioned so they look right at the new size. A border that works at 200 cm wide needs to be redrawn at 400 cm, or it looks thin and lost. This is design work, not resizing a file.
Timeline
A custom rug takes 4 to 8 months from approval to delivery. Smaller pieces and simpler designs sit on the shorter end. Large formats, high knot densities, or silk-heavy constructions take longer.
I know that's not instant. But a hand-knotted rug is not an instant product. The timeline reflects the reality of what's being made: a single piece, woven by hand, by skilled artisans who've spent years learning this craft.
Any Shape, Any Size
Rectangular is the norm, but we regularly produce round, oval, and irregularly shaped rugs. L-shaped pieces for open-plan rooms. Curved rugs that follow the contour of a staircase or a rounded wall. Runners of any length for hallways or corridors.
The price per square metre stays the same regardless of shape or dimensions. A 3 x 4 metre rectangle costs the same per square metre as a 2.7 x 5.3 metre custom shape. There's no surcharge for non-standard sizing.
Our Weavers
All TVR rugs are hand-knotted in India and Nepal by artisans working under Care & Fair certification. Care & Fair is an industry initiative that ensures fair wages, safe working conditions, and funds education and healthcare programmes in weaving communities. It's been part of how we operate since the beginning.
