Red Wine on Your Rug: A Step-by-Step Rescue Guide

Thibault Van Renne·October 12, 2026·3 min read

A glass of red goes over at dinner, and the first instinct is to grab whatever is closest: the salt, a splash of white wine, a kitchen sponge, a spray from under the sink. Most of the calls I get about wine stains come after one of those has already been tried. So this is what I tell my clients, in the order you will need it.

What should you do right after spilling red wine on a rug?

Blot the wine straight away and treat it with cold water. Take a dry white cotton cloth, press it onto the spill and lift, working from the edge of the stain towards the centre so you do not spread it. Never rub. Rubbing pushes the wine deeper into the pile and roughens the fibre.

Then dab the spot with cold water and blot again. Turn the cloth to a clean part each time and keep going until almost nothing more comes out. Keep the water cold: heat helps the colour settle into wool and silk. Let the spot dry naturally, away from a radiator or direct sun.

With a fresh spill, this alone often does most of the work. If a mark is still visible once the spot is completely dry, that is when our Stain Wonder comes in.

Why should you never put salt or white wine on a red wine stain?

Both make the stain worse. White wine does not neutralise red wine. It only dilutes it, and it adds sugar and acid to the fibre, which then have to come out as well.

Salt does more damage on a natural rug. It crystallises inside wool and silk, and those crystals are abrasive, so every step on that spot grinds them against the fibre. Salt can also make the dyes bleed, and it often leaves a ring that is more visible than the wine was. I would rather a client did nothing at all than reach for the salt cellar.

How do you remove a dried red wine stain with Stain Wonder?

You let Stain Wonder drip onto the stain until the whole mark is wet, then leave it to evaporate, and in most cases the stain disappears by itself. It is our own product for organic stains like wine, coffee, tea, fruit and blood, and it works differently from what most people expect. You do not scrub it in and you do not need a cloth to apply it.

The steps, as set out on our care page:

1. Test it first on an inconspicuous spot, a corner or a part that sits under the sofa, to check that the colours hold. Apply, let it dry and look.
2. Lift away any loose dried residue with a spoon.
3. Hold the bottle upside down over the dry stain and cover the entire area until it is soaked through.
4. Leave it alone. Stain Wonder stays active for 12 hours, so do not touch the spot until it has dried completely.
5. If a trace remains, repeat the treatment.
6. On wool, silk and other natural fibres, once the stain has gone, lay a moist cotton cloth over the spot and let it dry completely.

The hard part is patience. People want to see the stain vanish within a minute, and they start dabbing. With Stain Wonder the work happens while it dries, so give it the full time.

What is in the TVR Wonder Case?

The Wonder Case holds three products, a cleaning cloth and the certificate of origin for your rug. Stain Wonder treats organic stains. Stain Spray is for persistent stains such as glue, chewing gum, tar, oil and paint. Miracle Water cleans the pile and brings back its natural lustre. The case comes free with every TVR commission, and has done since 2018.

Keep it somewhere you can find it quickly. If a mark is still there once the spot has dried after the cold water, you can treat it that same evening instead of hunting for a product.

When should a red wine stain go to a professional?

When the stain is old or large, or still visible after you have repeated the treatment. Stain Wonder and Stain Spray are made for small, recent stains. Treating the same spot again and again can set the stain or damage the fibre, so at that point, stop.

That is when the rug comes to us for a professional wash. We pick it up, clean the whole rug and deliver it back to you, and we do the same for rugs we did not make. You can read how it works on our rug cleaning and repair page.
