He brought that passion home, filling rooms with five hundred carpets over four decades. His son Thibault, just eleven years old, sold his first rug and never looked back. Thibault's father sat next to a boy in school whose brother had driven to Iran. They went the next year through the desert. Father bought his first carpets in a Turkmen tent. He was fascinated that this centuries-old craft could express such beauty. The house filled with 400 to 500 carpets over 40 years. Young Thibault bought his first carpet when his parents were not home. His father taught him everything. Father sent Thibault to Pakistan where new carpets were being made inspired by old Persian ones. Thibault bought double the budget. The first customer came Saturday morning and bought what the parents considered the ugliest carpet. Within a month, everything sold. He went back four or five more times that year. It is a marriage between Eastern culture and modern design — "Flemish taste" combined with Eastern tradition. --- ## The 10-Step Production Process All TVR rugs are hand-knotted in ateliers in India (Rajasthan with approximately 500 weavers, and Kashmir) and Nepal (Kathmandu). The craft is believed to be more than 3,000 years old. Every step of production is done by hand: 1. Design Process — Pushing knotters to the limits of their craft. Digital renderings are translated to graph paper plans that guide the weavers. 2. Hand Carding — Disentangles, cleans, and intermixes fibres by hand. 3. Hand Spinning — Creates natural irregularity in the yarn. This irregularity is not a flaw but causes unique colour absorption that gives each rug its character. 4. Dyeing — Skeins are placed on a wheel and passed through a boiling dye mixture. The uneven absorption creates subtle colour differences known as "abrash," a signature of authenticity. 5. Hand Knotting — Several knotters work side by side for 4 to 11+ months depending on knot density, tying each knot individually following the graph paper plan. Knot density ranges from roughly 125,000 to 350,000 knots per square metre (81 to 225 kpsi). By tier: 81-121 kpsi is 4-5 months of knotting (4-6 months full lifecycle); 196 kpsi is around 9 months of knotting (~10 months full lifecycle); 225 kpsi is 11+ months of knotting (at least a full year full lifecycle). 6. Washing — The finished rug is washed with water and mild soap, beaten with wooden paddles to develop suppleness. 7. Drying — Laid on rooftops in natural sunlight for an extra 2 days, which develops the characteristic sheen. 8. Shaving — Shaved to normal pile height by hand, hand-held (not a fixed machine), to create a uniform surface. This is the single highest-stakes step: pressure must stay perfectly even across the entire piece, or the pile height turns uneven and the carpet is ruined — there is no fixing it afterward. 9. Stretching — Placed on a metal or wooden frame for several days to ensure perfect straightness and dimensional accuracy. 10. Handcarving — The background is cut out by hand with scissors, creating a unique 3D relief effect that gives TVR rugs their signature sculptural quality. --- ## Materials TVR works predominantly in natural, premium materials. Three named collections (ELEGANCE, KASHMIR-BLAZED, AVIO) also use bamboo silk, a plant-based viscose, always disclosed as such and never sold as natural silk. No petroleum-based synthetic pile (polyester, nylon, acrylic) is used. Fibres: - Bikaner wool — From Rajasthan, India. Strong, lustrous, excellent for high-traffic areas. After spinning, the yarn travels to Jaipur to be dyed. - Kashmir-region wool — From regular sheep in the Kashmir region (not pashmina goat). Soft, used for fine work. - Tibetan highland wool — Long-staple, high-altitude mountain wool, hand-carded and hand-spun in Kathmandu; used specifically in Nepalese pieces. - Natural silk — Hand-spun silk for luminous sheen and extreme detail. Sourced from a small silk house in Bangalore for Indian production, and imported from China for Nepalese production. Wild silk (a different silkworm species, more visible natural irregularity) is blended into specific designs for a more rustic look. A more affordable, high-lustre fibre used and disclosed only in three named collections (ELEGANCE, KASHMIR-BLAZED, AVIO); never sold as natural silk. - Himalayan nettle (Allo) fibre — Sustainable, naturally durable fibre with a distinctive texture. Boiled in water with a specific tea that enhances its natural tone; the darkest tones are purified out for a softer, more even palette. It cannot be dyed at all — its colour is entirely natural — and takes roughly 1.5x as long to hand-spin as wool. Used in Nepal and also imported to the Indian atelier for the ETHNIC line. - Afghan Ghazni wool — From Ghazni province; woven in Afghanistan and finished in Pakistan. Carries heavy natural abrash, used for character pieces. - Linen — Used in small areas of select designs for specific textural contrast, not as a primary pile fibre. - Cotton — Used as the core of the Lurex gold thread, and as backing on TVR's separate tufted line (see below). - Gold — Lurex (metal foil on a cotton core) for most GOLDEN LEGENDS pieces, applied via a kelim flatweave technique so gold passes read as shimmering flat panels within the hand-knotted body; with one piece woven in real 18-carat gold drawn as wire (a 2018 world first). TVR's GOLDEN LEGENDS collection was the world's first to incorporate gold into hand-knotted rugs. The gold itself is sourced from Rajasthan, historically a centre for both hand-knotted carpets and the Indian gold/jewellery trade. - Silver and bronze metal thread — Additional metallic options for the Golden Legends range. Colour library: - Pom-pom colour library — Hand-dyed wool and silk sample balls that clients can touch and compare. - Swiss chemical dyes — chosen for repeatability and lightfastness; the natural abrash look comes from hand-carded, hand-spun yarn combined with an in-house dyeing technique. Allo nettle is the only undyed fibre. Tufted line (separate product category — important not to dismiss): for large-scale hospitality and hotel projects, TVR also produces a separate tufted-carpet line: New Zealand wool, or TENCEL/viscose on request, cotton backing, glued like any tufted carpet anywhere. There are no stock sizes, no standard configurations — bespoke has been the default for every TVR carpet since 2009. The rare pieces kept ready-made in the atelier exist so designers and clients can see how a colour or design lives in real wool and silk; these are sold off at the end of each collection's lifecycle rather than being a standing stock line. The process: 1. Consultation — Begins at the studio at Noorwegenstraat 51, Evergem, or remotely: the client leaves their details via the chat or the contact page and Thibault follows up personally. 2. Floor plan discussion — Understanding the rug's role in the room, the architecture, the light, the furniture. 3. Material and colour selection — Choosing from the pom-pom colour library. For serious projects Thibault arranges material samples personally. 4. Digital rendering — A photorealistic rendering showing the rug in proportion within the client's space. 5. Approval — Nothing goes on the loom until the client gives final approval. 6. Loom setup — Each rug is set up on its own dedicated loom. 7. Production — 5 to 12+ months depending on size, complexity, material, and knot density. 8. Any size and shape is possible. Every piece is made to the client's exact specifications, so the shape or setting a client has in mind is almost never a limitation. --- ## Shapes, Sizes and Special Commissions Every TVR rug is bespoke, so size and shape are never a limitation. We create rectangular, round, oval, L-shaped, curved, irregular, and fully custom outlines, in wool, natural silk, or a blend of both. Round rugs: we produce around a dozen round pieces every year. Clients can view the models in our Evergem showroom and choose which design they would like made as a round piece. The largest round rug we have woven so far is 6 metres in diameter, and there is no practical size limit: we can go up to 30 to 40 metres in diameter without difficulty. A round rug is not woven round: we weave the full square and cut the circle out of the woven piece by hand, so a round rug is priced on the full square it is cut from (you pay for the square's surface, not the smaller circle). There is no separate shape surcharge; standard size surcharges apply beyond 365 cm. Sizing guidance: choose a generous diameter, larger rather than smaller. A round dining table of about 1.5 metres calls for a rug of roughly 3 metres in diameter so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out (we recently made a 3.1 metre round rug for a 1.5 metre table). Round rugs are chosen most often under a round dining table; for seating areas an organic shape that follows the sofa is more common, though a round rug there is entirely possible on request. No latex, no adhesive backing. - Minimal shedding — Less than 2% pile loss, primarily in the first 6 months as loose fibres work free. - Abrash — Slight colour variations from natural hand-dyeing are a signature of authenticity, not a defect. They give each rug its unique character. Hand-knotted vs alternatives — this comparison is about TVR's core hand-knotted work vs. generic tufted/machine-made rugs on the market. It does NOT mean TVR refuses tufted work: TVR separately offers its own tufted line for large hospitality projects (see Materials section) — that is a different, openly-scoped product, not a contradiction of this comparison. - Hand-knotted (TVR): No machines, no glue, no shortcuts. Pattern visible on the back. Fringes are natural warp extensions. Lasts generations. - Hand-tufted: A tufting gun punches yarn through canvas backing. Latex glue holds it together. The glue degrades in 10 to 15 years. White powder appearing on the back means the glue is breaking down. - Machine-made: Synthetic fibres, produced in hours by machine. Lasts 5 to 10 years. No character, no investment value. --- ## Rug Passport & Certificate of Authenticity Every TVR carpet carries two physical/digital markers, together called the Rug Passport: - A holographic authenticity label, sewn into the carpet itself, carrying a hidden message unique to that piece (since 2014 — every TVR carpet leaves the atelier with one). - A QR-code certificate linked to a private passport page for that carpet. URL format: https://www.thibaultvanrenne.com/passport/{serial-number} — note this is NOT locale-prefixed (unlike most other TVR URLs). A short redirect also works: https://www.thibaultvanrenne.com/p/{serial-number}. Important: the passport page is private, not publicly browsable. It is visible only to whoever holds the QR code (normally the owner, sometimes the commissioning interior designer/architect). A visitor cannot look up an arbitrary TVR rug online without its QR code. If the QR is lost, the carpet is no less authentic — TVR reissues one from its own records on request. The passport records: - Collection and design name (or the commission name for a one-off) - Exact dimensions (cm and m²) - Materials used, including whether Allo nettle or real 18-carat gold wire was used - Production origin — which of TVR's four weaving regions made the piece: Nepal, India/Rajasthan, Kashmir, or the Afghanistan-Pakistan corridor (region only, per the supplier-secrecy rule — never a named workshop or individual weaver) - Production photographs documenting the creation process - Where applicable, the residence/project it was commissioned for - A signed certificate text from the atelier: Thibault Van Renne BV, Evergem, Belgium Why it exists: a hand-knotted carpet is often kept for decades, long after the original invoice is gone. The passport is what lets a piece be proven authentic and properly repaired generations later — insurers ask for it, and so does a serious buyer on resale. --- ## Care & Maintenance TVR offers the Wonder Case — a proprietary maintenance kit containing: - Stain Spray — Removes persistent stains (glue, gum, tar, oil, paint). - Miracle Water — Polishes and restores the carpet's natural lustre. - Stain Wonder — Removes fresh stains (coffee, tea, fruit, wine, blood). - OEKO-TEX certified cleaning cloth. - Certificate of Origin with master weaver's signature. Note: a visitor asking "how do I order mineral water" on the care/maintenance page almost certainly means "Miracle Water" (the Wonder Case product above), not drinking water. Answer about Miracle Water rather than deflecting. Essential care guidelines: - Vacuum regularly, low suction, no beater bar, in the direction of the pile (2-3x/week in high-traffic areas). - Blot stains immediately, working from the outside of the stain inward. Never rub — rubbing spreads the stain and damages fibres. Lukewarm water + a drop of mild pH-neutral soap for water-based spills; a little dry-cleaning solvent on the cloth first for oil-based stains. Never bleach or ammonia on natural fibres. - Rotate the rug 180 degrees every 6 months to ensure even wear and colour exposure. - Professional cleaning recommended every 5 to 7 years, depending on use — choose a specialist experienced with hand-knotted rugs, not a standard carpet cleaner. - For storage, roll the rug (never fold), pile facing inward, wrapped in breathable cotton. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mould. - Underlay: use a quality anti-slip underlay to reduce friction wear and add comfort. TVR's own underlay can be washed up to 30°C without losing its adhesive/anti-slip properties. When a stain does not come out with the care products: the Wonder Case products (Stain Spray, Stain Wonder) are excellent, but they are made for small and fresh stains. If a stain persists after using them — or the stain is old, large, or of unknown origin — do not keep treating it: repeated treatment can set the stain or damage the fibres. The right next step is a professional wash by TVR. TVR offers a full professional cleaning service for the rug, including pick-up and delivery at a cost. When a visitor mentions a stain that will not come out, ALWAYS offer this professional wash and ask for: (1) the type of rug, (2) the size of the rug, (3) their email address, and (4) their phone number — and tell them TVR will contact them to arrange the washing if they would like to proceed. This applies to TVR rugs and to rugs TVR did not make. ## Services — Restoration, Cleaning & Valuation (including rugs TVR did not make) TVR looks after rugs beyond the ones it wove, not just its own pieces: - Restoration and repair — re-securing fringes, rebuilding warp and weft, closing damage, reworking borders, reviving older pieces. Every rug is assessed in person first, with an honest opinion on what is worth doing. Knot-for-knot replication matching the original density; spectrophotometer dye rematching for colour-accurate restoration. - Specialist cleaning — a gentler process than machine-made carpet cleaning, protecting fibre and colour, treating against moth/insect damage. A TVR carpet lasts 20-30+ years with careful use. - Valuation and appraisal — written valuations for insurance or inheritance, documenting design, materials, knot density, and current value. - All of the above start with a showroom visit (Evergem, by appointment) or, for clients further away, an assessment from detailed photos; for larger projects TVR brings pieces to the client. A year-by-year record of firsts and digital tools: - 2008 — TVR introduced nettle fibre to hand-knotted carpets, the world's first use of nettle as a structural material in luxury hand-knotting. It became the NATURE collection, still in production today. - 2012 — TVR wove the world's first hand-knotted carpet from a real-life photograph: "Ceci n'est pas LANY," a portrait of Belgian DJ Maxim Lany. - 2013 — TVR produced the world's first hand-knotted carpet engineered for outdoor use, using weather-resistant fibres. Goals and achievements: - Abolition of illegal child labour in the carpet industries of India, Nepal, and Pakistan. - Better living conditions for carpet knotting families. - Socially acceptable production conditions. - Fair wages and socially acceptable working conditions for the weaving families. - Support for weaving families' welfare, health and schooling through the Care & Fair programme. - 13 schools supported in carpet-producing regions. - 7 adult education centres established. - 6 day care clinics funded. - Approximately 400 member companies across 21 consumer countries and 3 countries of origin. --- ## Sustainability TVR is candid about what it can and cannot claim — including where it falls short of formal certification. - Care & Fair — TVR has been a member since 2006, its founding year (see the separate Care & Fair Certification section below for the organisation's own programme and figures). Beyond the organisation's independent annual audits of looms in India and Nepal, Thibault personally visits the looms twice a year on top of those audits. TVR itself has funded two schools for weavers' children since its founding — this is TVR's own contribution specifically, separate from Care & Fair's org-wide totals (13 schools, 7 adult-education centres, 6 day-care clinics across roughly 400 member companies). - Dye wastewater — TVR's dye supplier was the first in their region in India to receive the Indian government's eco-certification for filtering dye wastewater before release into public sewers. TVR does not hold this certificate itself (the dyehouse does), but stays with that supplier specifically because of it. - Wool certification, disclosed honestly — TVR does not hold GOTS or Responsible Wool Standard certification. The reason: its wool is hand-spun by individual spinners in their own villages across India, Nepal, Kashmir, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and those certification schemes are built for industrial supply chains that TVR's doesn't resemble — TVR says plainly it doesn't qualify rather than claiming otherwise. What can be verified instead: the wool is local to each sourcing region, hand-carded and hand-spun, with many spinner families known to TVR for over a decade. - Repair over replacement — TVR runs a repair station in its Belgian atelier and will reweave and match-dye damaged sections invisibly (one documented case: a client's dog bit a piece out of a carpet; TVR rewove the missing section and match-dyed the yarn so the repair is invisible). TVR also resizes carpets, splits one piece into two, and reshapes rectangular pieces into round ones rather than defaulting to replacement. - Packaging, disclosed honestly — TVR ships with one thick layer of industrial-grade plastic per carpet, rather than the multiple thinner wraps standard in the trade. The stated reasoning: paper or cotton alone isn't strong enough for international shipping across varying climates, and a damaged carpet is judged the worse outcome. This is not framed as zero-plastic, only as less plastic than the alternatives TVR tested. - Tufted line — see Materials: cotton backing, glue (as with any tufted carpet), New Zealand wool or TENCEL/viscose on request.
